Contributor Day

Start your WordPress contribution journey in Penang

Join us on April 9, 2027, in Penang, Malaysia for a full day of learning, collaboration, and contribution to the WordPress open-source project.

Contributor Day is for both first-time and experienced contributors. You do not need to be a developer, and you do not need previous contribution experience. Writers, translators, designers, testers, marketers, organizers, educators, photographers, developers, and WordPress users can all find meaningful ways to participate.

No prior contribution experience is required.

What is Contributor Day?

Contributor Day is a dedicated day where WordPress community members work together to improve WordPress and its ecosystem.

Instead of watching presentations, you’ll collaborate with experienced contributors and other community members on real projects that help improve WordPress for millions of users around the world.

For newcomers, Contributor Day is an opportunity to learn by doing, with guidance from experienced contributors. For regular contributors, it’s a chance to collaborate in person, work on more complex tasks, exchange ideas, and move ongoing projects forward.

Why should I participate?

Contributor Day is more than a chance to complete a few tasks in one day. It is an opportunity to learn how WordPress is built, meet the people behind the project, and find a way to contribute that matches your interests and skills.

By participating, you can:

  • Learn by doing. Work alongside experienced contributors and gain practical knowledge you can use beyond Contributor Day.
  • Meet the WordPress community. Collaborating on a real task is often an easier way to build meaningful connections than simply meeting people between conference sessions.
  • Develop new skills. Contribution can give you experience in development, testing, design, accessibility, documentation, translation, communication, community work, and many other areas.
  • Make a visible impact. Your work can help improve WordPress, its documentation, resources, community, or other open-source initiatives.
  • Find a team you want to stay involved with. Contributor Day can be your first step into regular contribution rather than a one-day activity.
  • Share your experience. Experienced contributors can use the day to mentor others, collaborate face-to-face, move complex work forward, and exchange ideas across teams.

You do not need to arrive knowing exactly what you want to work on. Part of Contributor Day is discovering where your experience, interests, and curiosity can be useful.

Choose how you want to participate

There is no single “right” way to experience Contributor Day.

Discover — I’m new to contribution

If this is your first Contributor Day, or you are not sure where to start, we will help you find your way.

You will be able to:

  • learn about different Make WordPress teams;
  • get help choosing an area that fits your interests and skills;
  • join beginner-friendly workshops;
  • ask questions at the Help Desk;
  • get support from experienced contributors and Contributor Buddies;
  • start with tasks suitable for first-time contributors.

Contribute — I know where I want to help

If you already have an idea of which Make team interests you, you can join its contribution table and work with other contributors.

Depending on the team, contribution may include:

  • testing;
  • writing or improving documentation;
  • translating WordPress;
  • reviewing photos;
  • accessibility testing;
  • design and UX work;
  • support;
  • community and event work;
  • development;
  • reviewing issues and tickets;
  • creating educational materials.

Most tables will have tasks prepared for different levels of experience.

Advance — I’m an experienced contributor

Contributor Day is also a place for experienced contributors to work together on tasks that benefit from in-person collaboration.

Depending on the participating teams, this may include:

  • working on complex tickets or projects;
  • testing and reviewing existing work;
  • team planning and brainstorming;
  • discussions between contributors from different Make teams;
  • helping onboard and mentor new contributors.

We want Contributor Day to support both meaningful project progress and long-term contributor growth.

Contributor Day activities

In addition to contribution tables, we are planning several activities to help people learn, connect, and contribute in different ways.

Make WordPress tables

Make WordPress teams will have dedicated tables where contributors can work on real tasks, collaborate with others, and get guidance from more experienced contributors when needed.

We will publish participating teams, Table Leads, experience levels, preparation requirements, and possible tasks before the event.

Contributor Day Workshops

Hands-on workshops will help attendees learn practical skills needed for contribution.

We are planning workshops for different levels and different kinds of contribution, not only development.

Workshop details will include:

  • intended audience;
  • experience level;
  • prerequisites;
  • software or accounts to prepare;
  • facilitators;
  • capacity;
  • schedule.

Call for Workshop Facilitators opens September 29, 2026.

Open-Source Library

The Open-Source Library is a space for one-on-one conversations with experienced WordPress contributors.

You will be able to “borrow” a contributor for a short conversation and ask about topics such as:

  • contribution;
  • open-source;
  • WordPress teams;
  • community involvement;
  • contributor journeys;
  • career development;
  • leadership and mentoring.

We will publish the list of participating “Books”, their topics, schedule, and booking information closer to the event.

WordCamp Asia Hackathon

We are also developing a new do_action-inspired Hackathon alongside WordCamp Asia.

The Hackathon is planned as a small, project-focused activity where participants collaborate to build something useful for a real community, charity, cultural, educational, or socially valuable project.

It will be different from regular Contributor Day tables: participants will work together around selected projects with clear ownership, preparation, and goals.

More information about the format, project criteria, participant requirements, and schedule will be published separately.

Call for Hackathon Projects is planned for February 9 – March 9, 2027.

Registration

Contributor Day attendance is limited to 600 participants.

Registration will open on January 27, 2027 and remain open until capacity is reached.

Contributor Day registration will be separate from the main WordCamp Asia ticket registration.

Before registering, we recommend reviewing the participating Make teams and preparation information so you can choose the activities that best match your interests.
