Venue

WordCamp Asia 2027 will be held at the Penang Waterfront Convention Centre (PWCC) in Penang, Malaysia, from 9 to 11 April 2027. PWCC is Northern Malaysia’s first and largest waterfront convention centre, and Penang’s largest exhibition and convention venue, a building made for international conferences rather than adapted into one.

That mattered to us. A flagship WordCamp needs room for talks, workshops, sponsors, Contributor Day and the hallway track that happens between all of them, and it needs that room under one roof. PWCC gives us the scale to do it without splitting the community across buildings, and the flexibility to shape the space around the event we are still designing.

Getting there

By air

Penang International Airport (PEN) is about 12 km away, roughly 15–20 minutes by car. Penang has direct international flights, with further connections through Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

By car or ride-hailing

Grab is widely available in Penang and inexpensive. George Town is about 15 minutes away, and the First Penang Bridge about 5 minutes.

By train

KTMB intercity trains stop at Butterworth on the mainland. From there you can cross to the island by ferry and continue to the venue by bus, taxi or ride-hailing; the venue sits roughly midway between the airport and the ferry terminal. Crossing by road over the Penang Bridge is also straightforward; about 5 minutes from the bridge to PWCC.

By bus

Rapid Penang runs the island’s public bus network, with fares from about RM1.40 for short trips; a Rapid Passport week pass (around RM30) is sold at the Komtar, Jetty and Balik Pulau kiosks, not on board. Route 401E stops at Jabatan Laut Wilayah Utara, near the venue, running every 25 minutes from 5:45 AM to 11:30 PM. Standard routes 301, 302, 303 and 304 travel via the inner Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah road. From those stops it is a 10–15 minute walk toward the coast to reach PWCC.

Parking

A multi-storey parking facility with up to 2,900 bays serves the venue, using a ticketless licence plate recognition (LPR) system for entry and exit.

A space built for scale

PWCC offers 10,443 square metres of pillarless event space. No columns means clear sightlines, and it means a hall can be arranged in whatever shape a session needs instead of the shape the structure dictates.

On Level 4 there are five multipurpose halls totalling 7,318 square metres, separated by flexible walls so they can be used individually or combined; two together, three together, or all five as one continuous room. Level 3 adds 19 meeting rooms across 1,895 square metres, most of which also combine with their neighbours.

For a multi-track event, that combination of large halls and many right-sized rooms is exactly what we want: big rooms for keynotes and sponsor areas, smaller ones for workshops and Contributor Day tables, with the walls set to fit the programme rather than the other way around. We will publish the specific room assignments once the programme is confirmed.

Sustainability

PWCC is Malaysia’s first GreenRE Gold certified convention centre, under the non-residential category. The venue’s own commitments cover energy-efficient systems and green building operations aimed at reducing the environmental impact of the events it hosts.

A conference of this size has a real footprint; flights, food, printing, power. We cannot make that disappear, but choosing a venue that measures and manages its own impact is one of the more meaningful decisions available to us, and it is part of why PWCC stood out.

Built for attendees

Beyond the halls themselves, the venue includes facilities that make a three-day event easier to be at:

  • An on-site medical room.
  • Two luggage rooms — useful on the last day, when many of us are travelling straight to the airport.
  • Two green rooms and performer restrooms with lockers and showers, which we expect to use for speaker preparation.
  • Organiser rooms and VIP rooms for the teams working behind the scenes.
  • A buggy service on Level 4 for moving across the venue.
  • Prayer rooms are available on site.
  • Lifts serve all levels of the venue.

Food

Catering at PWCC is handled in-house by the venue’s F&B partner, Foodlink, an international Halal food operator that also works at the India International Convention & Expo Centre and the Dubai World Trade Centre. Its kitchen operations are certified to ISO 22000:2018, the international food safety management standard.

All catering at the event will be Halal. We are planning vegetarian, vegan and allergen-aware options as well, because our crowd comes from more than thirty countries and eats accordingly. Details on menus and dietary registration will follow closer to the event.

The Light City neighbourhood

PWCC sits inside The Light City, a waterfront development on the eastern edge of Penang island. A 750-metre sea promenade runs along the water, a good place to walk off a long session, and a better one at sunset.

The Hyatt Regency, with 459 rooms, is part of the same development, and The Waterfront Shoppes next door houses more than 300 retail, food and beverage outlets. Practically, that means you can stay, eat and find a coffee within a few minutes’ walk of the registration desk.

Explore Penang

George Town, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, is a short drive from the venue: shophouses, clan jetties, street art and one of the most celebrated street food scenes anywhere. Penang has been named a top street food city by Forbes and the world’s top food destination by Lonely Planet. Come hungry, and leave a day or two on either side of the conference if you can.
