Planning an international trip takes some preparation. This guide covers the main entry requirements for Malaysia and links to the official services you may need. Check the requirements before booking your travel and again shortly before departure, as immigration rules can change.
Before you travel
You may need:
- A passport valid for more than six months from your planned date of entry
- A valid visa or eVISA, if required
- A Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC), unless you are exempt
- Confirmed return or onward travel
- Proof of accommodation
- Any other supporting documents required for your passport or visa type
Check whether you need a visa
Malaysia offers visa-free entry to visitors from many countries, but the permitted length and purpose of stay vary.
Check the Immigration Department of Malaysia’s visa requirements by country. You may also wish to contact the Malaysian embassy or consulate responsible for your country of residence.
Please note these current arrangements:
- Indian passport holders: The current visa exemption is scheduled to end on December 31, 2026. As WordCamp Asia takes place in 2027, check for an updated announcement before making travel plans.
- Chinese passport holders: Eligible holders of ordinary and public affairs passports may currently enter Malaysia without a visa for up to 30 days per visit. The total stay must not exceed 90 days within any 180-day period.
Applying for an eVISA
If you need a visa and can apply online, use only the official Malaysia eVISA portal.
We recommend starting your preparations at least 30 days before traveling. Current official guidance recommends submitting your application at least two weeks before departure.
Depending on your application, you may need:
- A passport-sized photo
- A scan of your passport biodata page
- A confirmed return ticket
- Proof of paid accommodation
- A birth certificate for a minor
- Other supporting documents, such as a bank statement or proof of residence
Requirements and fees vary. Follow the instructions provided by the official eVISA portal for your application.
Need an invitation letter?
We can provide an invitation letter to registered attendees who need one for a visa application.
Please enter your full name, nationality, and passport number exactly as they appear in your passport. This helps us prepare the letter correctly and avoid unnecessary delays.
The letter confirms your registration and the event details. It does not guarantee visa approval or entry into Malaysia, provide financial sponsorship, or allow the organizing team to influence or speed up the immigration process.
Complete your MDAC
Most foreign visitors must submit a Malaysia Digital Arrival Card within three days before arriving in Malaysia. Some travelers are exempt.
The MDAC is free. Complete it only through the official MDAC portal.
Keep a copy of your confirmation where you can reach it easily while traveling.
Arriving in Malaysia
Immigration officers may ask to see:
- Your passport
- Your visa or eVISA, if required
- Your MDAC confirmation
- Your return or onward ticket
- Proof of accommodation
- Any other supporting documents relevant to your visit
Having these documents ready will make the immigration process easier. The immigration officer at the border makes the final decision about entry.
