What Can You Expect at Your First WordCamp?

Attending your first WordCamp can be exciting, but you might not know what to expect. Will it be a full day of presentations? Will you have opportunities to meet other people? What if you’re new to WordPress and don’t know anyone there?

Every WordCamp is a little different, but most combine sessions, conversations, and community activities and here’s a look at what you might experience at your first WordCamp event in general.

1. A Welcome From the WordPress Community

When you arrive, you’ll usually check in at the registration area. Volunteers can help you get oriented and find the session rooms and other activities. You’ll also receive a name badge or other event materials.

If you don’t know anyone before you arrive, don’t worry. WordCamp brings together people with different backgrounds and levels of experience, including other first-time attendees. Take a moment to settle in and get comfortable before the program begins.

2. Talks and Sessions on Different Topics

Most WordCamps feature speakers with different backgrounds and levels of experience, so topics can range from WordPress development and website performance to design, accessibility, content creation, marketing, and running a business.

Sessions may include presentations, demonstrations, or question-and-answer periods. Some topics will be familiar, while others may be new to you. Choose the sessions that interest you.

3. Breaks, Lunch, and Time to Recharge

Breaks throughout the day give you time to get a drink, have lunch, stretch your legs, and prepare for the next activity. They can be a chance to talk with other attendees about a session or their work, or simply have a casual conversation while you wait for coffee.

Worth noting that you don’t need to treat every break as a networking opportunity. It’s fine to take some time for yourself when you need it.

4. Conversations With People From the WordPress Community

As mentioned, WordCamp brings together people with different backgrounds, including developers, designers, bloggers, freelancers, agency owners, business operators, and WordPress contributors. Some may have attended many WordCamps, while others are there for the first time, just like you.

Here is the tip: you don’t need a formal introduction. A simple question about someone’s work or a session can start a conversation. You can start conversations whenever you feel comfortable to connect with the others. It can in session rooms, lunch areas, or in community gatherings.

5. Sponsor Booths and Community Activities

Many WordCamps have sponsor booths where companies share products and services related to WordPress and the web. You can stop by to ask questions, explore a product, or learn about services for hosting, development, design, security, e-commerce, and other parts of running a website.

Some events have community booths, interactive activities, or ways to meet people involved in WordPress projects. You can visit whichever booths or activities interest you. There’s no need to see everything or buy anything.

6. Contributor Day and Other Activities

Some WordCamps include a Contributor Day, when attendees work together on the WordPress project. Teams may work on coding, testing, documentation, translation, design, accessibility, support, or community initiatives.

To join the Contributor Day, you don’t need to be an experienced developer or be familiar WordPress at all. If you’re newcomers, you can learn how contributions work and find tasks that match your interests and experience.

Keep in mind that Contributor Day may require separate registration or have limited capacity, so check the event’s instructions if you’d like to take part. Depending on the event, you may find workshops, social activities, or an official after-party, too.

7. An Experience That Goes Beyond the Schedule

The talks and activities are only part of WordCamp. You may hear a useful idea in a presentation, discover a tool while talking with a sponsor, or gain a new perspective through a conversation. You might leave with notes, new connections, or a better understanding of the WordPress community. Every attendee’s experience is different, and it doesn’t need to include a major revelation to be worthwhile.
