The goal of our WordCamp Asia Diversity Scholarship is aligned with our event’s vision; an inclusive, affordable, and interactive event that supports the growth of the community through experiential learning.
After reviewing applications with that in mind, we are pleased to announce we have selected the very first recipient of the WordCamp Asia Diversity Scholarship, Awais Arfan.
Meet Awais from Faisalabad, Pakistan!
Awais is a web developer and lover of all things WordPress. He graduated in Computer Science from the University of Agriculture in his city. He has been an active organiser of the Faisalabad WordPress Meetup since March 2020.
He is active in the Pakistani web and technology communities as a speaker and event co-organiser.
He has been to a local WordCamp (Lahore, Pakistan in 2019) as a volunteer but has never been to other WordCamps outside of the country.
In his application, he shared that he would love to create a bigger impact within his community through the experience he can gain by attending WordCamp Asia. He looks forward to learning more and expanding his knowledge to create more relevant content and training with his team.
Why are you passionate about growing the WordPress community in your area?
I love creativity and believe that the world of WordPress is endless. My wish is to be a successful contributor to this community by making WordPress easy, accessible, and known to all.
There are many attributes to the underrepresented demography of open-source contributors. It includes the younger generation who are starting their career, those who are living outside of the capital city of the country where there is a bigger community, and anyone who is financially strained – Pakistan is experiencing one of the highest inflation rates in Asia.
Through this scholarship, we are only able to help one attendee to come to WordCamp Asia. But we believe that Awais’ determination to make a difference in his community will extend the impact to more WordPress enthusiasts.
