Stories from Contributor Day Attendance

Contributing to any Open Source platform can provide a unique experience. Getting involved in the process and understanding the long-term benefits has a lasting impact on the contributors. Whether fixing a small typo or a bug or even translating WordPress into a local language, that can make you proud. WordCamps often create such platforms in the form of a Contributor Day.

WordCamp Asia 2023 will provide contributors with a platform to collaborate and improve WordPress. Your participation is what matters, and it makes all the difference. We present to you the third series of contributor stories.

‘WordCamp Mumbai 2019 Contributor Day.’

@akshayar

In WordCamp Mumbai 2019, there was a dedicated day for contribution & my colleague, and I had an opportunity to understand various ways of WordPress contribution. The WordPress community is very welcoming and helpful. Some mentors traveled along the way for this Contributor Day. They explained the process step by step and made sure we understood it.

I earlier was solely focused on the Core contributions & after this Contributor Day. It opened more doors of giving back, such as Translations, Support queries, meetups, WordPress.tv, etc. It also connects us with some amazing, enthusiastic group of people.

We were so overwhelmed by this idea of the contribution that we shared this with our CTO. He also supported us & allowed internal Contribution Day at the office. My colleague & I took presentations and explained the various possibilities of contributing to our teammates. The overall experience was very fulfilling. This activity leads to 7+ Core contributors, 4+ open source contributions & some translation contributions as well.

Our team contributed to WordPress & other open repositories like WooCommerce etc.

‘Contribute in WordPress Core on Contribution Day.’

The first WordCamp Ahmedabad was organized on the 6th, 7th, and 8th of October 2017. It was the first two conference days, followed by Contributor Day. As it was the first contributor day, people were excited about it. More than 150 attendees came to contribute. We had set up different rooms for contributing to the Make WordPress Teams channels, including Core, Polyglots, WPTV, Meta, Them Review, Support, and Community.

My role was to manage different teams and provide support. But specifically, I was leading the Core Team, providing support and explaining to attendees how to get started and contribute to WordPress Core. As it was my first experience as a team lead, I was excited, and it was fun! I explained to people how to create a WP.org profile, join slack, report a bug, submit patches, props, profile badges, etc.

This experience helped me a lot, as I love contributing to WordPress Core. . I had started regularly contributing to WordPress Core. I have submitted many patches so far. Not only that, but I have received more than 50 props for tickets 🙂 These helped me become a noteworthy contributor to WordPress 5.1, 5.2, and 5.3 releases.

I regularly attend slack meetings, which help connect with community members. Currently, I am part of the #training-faculty team. Getting help from other people is accessible in the WordPress community. Community, support, and events are essential for me too!

‘Contributor Day that changed my life.’

My very first WordCamp was in Porto just a few months ago 😉 Since then, I have been to one more Contributor Day at WCUS in San Diego and looking forward to meeting all the awesome people at WC Asia Contributor Day!

Simply put – I fell in love with WordPressers during the very first Contributor Day I attended and realised that I would like to work with these wonderful people every day. That is why I have changed my role to become the Community Manager – thanks to my awesome manager who accommodated my wish!

The most important area of WordPress is the people who gathered for the contribution to WordPress. WordPress is created by the community, run and nurtured by the community, and grows only because of the community <3

‘I Love Content and that’s How I’m Connected to WordPress.’

I’m a digital content creator and storyteller from Kolkata, India. My WordPress journey started in 2016 when I started blogging with my two blogs: Travel and Lifestyle. Later, I joined WordPress Kolkata Community in 2019 and contributed to the content domain. On any given Contributor Day, I would like to work on effectively blogging using WordPress, types of blogs, how to decide on what to write, the anatomy of a blog post, what to write, and blog marketing strategy and how to use social media.

I like WordPress as a development tool because of its infinitely configurable stature for supporting my purposes. That’s the joy of working in WordPress. So, WP is a reliable tool for publishing and managing content for anyone living online. I’d look for WordPress to break new ground in the coming 2-3 years as it’s trying to accommodate the common web implementer. And thank goodness! Look for WordPress to become more of a publishing commodity rather than a tool built by web developers for web development.

The joy of creating content on WordPress has helped me to connect to a few WordPress communities in India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. Off-late I’ve started joining different WordCamps outside India and am constantly in touch with a few more individuals from other parts of Europe and America. It has helped me to keep abreast of the latest trends and happenings in WordPress and overall digital media apart from developing camaraderie. This experience with a contribution to WordPress is phenomenal.

‘My First Contributor Day Table Lead.’

Firstly, I started WordPress in 2015. In 2017, I learned about WordCamp Kathmandu, and I was very interested in attending it. My colleagues and I observed and learned a lot. Since that day, I have been actively attending meetups (online/offline) as well as WordCamps. I had yet to learn about contributing to WordPress before.

In 2019, I got a chance to attend WCKTM2019 contributor day and learned about contribution. Onwards, I am contributing as much as possible.

Lastly, WordCamp Kathmandu Team asked me to lead the patterns team at WCKTM2022 Contributor Day, created 30+ patterns, and guided 50+ attendees.

I feel it’s one of my best contributions to the WordPress Community as a token of thanking WordPress in return.
