Core
Whether you’re joining Contributor Day in person in Taipei or following along online via the #contributor-day Slack channel, thank you and welcome!
To start with, at a minimum, you’ll need to have the latest stable version of nodejs and npm, which you can find here: https://nodejs.org/en (LTS is the one Core and Gutenberg use) and Git installed locally (for core you can also use SVN).
Depending on whether you’re planning to work on Core or Gutenberg, there are a few different options:
For Core, clone the repo and follow the instructions here to install the included development environment. Docker is a prerequisite for it, so if you pick this option, go ahead and install Docker first.
For the editor, clone the Gutenberg repo and you can then use the wp-env package, which also requires Docker.
An alternative to these is wp-now, which is a more lightweight option that requires only node/npm. It’s based on wp-playground. Note that there have been issues with Playground on Windows.
For those attending in person, we’ll be located in the Code Lounge (South Lounge) on the third floor.
It’s also required to create a WordPress.org account if you don’t already have one, and if you’re using Git, you’ll also need a GitHub.com account.
Documentation
The Documentation Team is responsible for keeping WordPress documentation accurate and up-to-date. During WordCamp Asia Contributors Day, they’ll be reviewing and updating existing content.
Whether you’re a developer or a regular WordPress user, you can join the table and contribute to the project! They have several projects to work on: developer documentation will suit you if you have technical and coding knowledge, and the end-user documentation project is perfect if you’re an avid user and want to create a better guide for fellow WordPressers
No prior experience is necessary! They’ll provide guidance and support to help you get started. All you have to prepare are WordPress.org and GitHub accounts.
You can also check getting started at a contributor day page for more information.
Marketing
The Marketing team helps promote WordPress to current and future users and contributors. They create and amplify campaigns to support the growth of the WordPress project.
If you’re passionate about taking part in campaigns and initiatives intended to help spread the word about WordPress — both internally and externally — then this is the team for you!
Some of the things you can get involved in include social media initiatives, content creation, and helping onboard new contributors to the WordPress community.
In order to get started with the Marketing Team during Contributor Day, you’ll need to have a WordPress.org account and GitHub.com account. We also regularly communicate on the Make WordPress channel on Slack. We’ll help you set those up at the beginning of the sessions, but it would be great if you had that set up already.
Meta
Meta team would like to work on local development environments for as many Meta projects as possible. Currently, they’ve migrated some to wp-env and will continue with this. But they will also try to get wp-now working for some simple projects.
A second topic is the WPTV redesign. And they will also coordinate with the other team for this.
You should have WordPress.org account to get started.
Patterns
On the Patterns table, attendees can expect a more creative direction on how to make beautifully designed, ready-to-go layouts. Whether you are a seasoned web designer or just starting your journey with Gutenberg, this table is to guide and support you every step of the way. Their work will focus on ideating, working on the basics, and being creative! If you are passionate about being a part of the Patterns team, this is the perfect opportunity for you to join them and contribute to the WordPress community.
During their session, they will also cover the essentials of creating patterns that adhere to the WordPress.org pattern guidelines. Whether you aspire how to create your own pixel-perfect layouts or submit them to the WordPress Patterns directory, they will walk you through the process and share valuable insights. By the end of their gathering, you’ll have all the resources needed to become a WordPress Patterns author in no time!
Furthermore, the Patterns table will be set up at Code Lounge (South Lounge) on the third floor, and they can’t wait to welcome you all to an enriching learning experience. To ensure a smooth and productive session, they kindly request that you create a WordPress.org account. This will help streamline the process and allow you to make the most of your time with us. They are thrilled to have you as part of our community and look forward to an engaging and interactive day at Our Patterns table.

Photos Team Resources
Photos Team Projects for Contributor Day
- Getting folks set up to contribute to the directory and understand the guidelines.
- Discussion on what makes a good photo, what the moderators look for in moderation, and what makes a good photo description.
- Any moderators present will moderate as many photos as possible in real-time.
Plugins
To ensure a smooth experience on the day, the Plugins team recommends installing a local development environment on your laptop in advance. The conference venue’s Wi-Fi may only sometimes be optimal, especially when many people are using it simultaneously. Achieving this prerequisite over a stable and fast connection is much simpler.
Here’s the checklist:
- Latest Local WordPress Setup: You can use tools like MAMP, XAMPP, Local by Flywheel, Docker, or WP-Now.
- Latest Stable Version of Node.js and npm: You can find it here: https://nodejs.org/en (the LTS version is the one used by Core and Gutenberg).
- Code Editor: Consider using VS Code or Sublime.
- Git: it’s optional but good to have.
The Plugins team eagerly anticipates your presence at the event!
