About Joseph Jacks

Joseph Jacks is the Founder and General Partner of OSS Capital, a prominent venture capital firm based in San Francisco. Joseph’s career has been a remarkable journey through the world of open-source technology, and his contributions have left an indelible mark on the industry.

Before founding OSS Capital, Joseph served as an Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR) at Quantum Corporation, where he played a pivotal role in supporting the Rook project. His efforts led to the project’s subsequent donation to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), marking the organization’s first foray into storage projects. Joseph’s involvement with CNCF has been extensive, spanning board membership, committee participation, and advisory roles since its inception.

Joseph is also known for founding KubeCon, an event that is now managed by the Linux Foundation’s CNCF. Additionally, he founded and built Kismatic, the first enterprise-focused commercial Kubernetes company, which was eventually acquired by Apprenda and subsequently by ATOS. Throughout his career, Joseph has worked with other notable companies, including Mesosphere (now D2IQ), Enstratius (acquired by Dell Software), TIBCO Software, and Talend, where he held various roles in sales, engineering, product, and strategy.

Furthermore, Joseph is the visionary behind Open Core Summit, a global conference focused on the Commercial Open-Source Software (COSS) ecosystem. Open Core Summit operates as a vendor-neutral community, featuring leading investment firms, cloud providers, COSS companies, analysts, Fortune 2000 enterprises, and more. The inaugural OCS in 2019 brought together nearly 1,000 attendees from 29 countries, featured 40 major sponsors, and hosted over 100 speakers. The second annual OCS in 2020, held entirely online, drew an astonishing 13,000+ attendees, featured 200+ speakers, and was supported by 50+ major sponsors. These events have played a pivotal role in democratizing knowledge about the rapid growth of the COSS category.
