We are excited to welcome Ben Thompson as our next invited speaker for WordCamp Asia 2024. Ben is the founder and author of Stratechery, and pioneered the subscription business model for individual writers.
About Ben Thompson
Ben has been publishing Stratechery on WordPress since 2013. Stratechery is a blog about technology and strategy, and the impact of the Internet on media. That includes blogging: Ben has, from the beginning, been a strong proponent of the idea that not only is blogging not dead but that its future is brighter than ever. That belief was undergirded by the possibility of new business models, particularly subscriptions. Ben proved that with Stratechery, one of the first subscription-supported blogs that created the model for the entire industry. Today Stratechery is a multi-million dollar content business, and Ben is an influential voice in Silicon Valley, Wall Street, and Washington D.C.
Stratechery has, from the beginning, been built on WordPress. WordPress and its ecosystem made it possible for Ben to build a new kind of media company, where he was the only employee. Over the last few years, though, Ben has been working to build what he sees as a missing piece of that ecosystem: software that lets creators truly have a direct connection with their customers.
Session Details
Ben’s session will tell the story of Stratechery and the development of creator-centric businesses, and how WordPress made that possible. Ben will also introduce Passport, the WordPress plugin that powers Stratechery, and why it can unlock new use cases and business models for creators of all types.
