The Future of Democratizing Publishing: the WordPress Journey

The mission of the WordPress project is to “democratize publishing”, and there’s nothing more compelling than empowering people to find their voices. But it’s become more than just giving people a place to be themselves online — it’s a portal to commerce, it is a canvas for identity, and a catalyst for change. Join Josepha as she explores the evolution of the human impact of WordPress, and makes a few predictions about how that could change in the future.

Stepping Back To Move Forward

Have you ever felt too ashamed to admit to yourself or others about your state of mind? I learned that there is nothing ever more important in life than my own health – both physical and mental.
There have been many times where my path changed and even when I had to break out of my own life in order to protect my health.
There is a myth that we all have a destiny and that we know it from a young age. Don’t envy those people!

Only by stepping back once in a while and by reconsidering my personal decisions, did I became who I am today: a pioneer who likes new challenges and who needs to reinvent herself from time to time.
Nevertheless, deep inside I am also afraid of change and I struggle with mental health issues. Leaving the comfort zone can be very scary but everything you want lies on the other side of fear.

In this talk, I will give you my insight on why stepping back is important to your progress and to find out who you really are. We’ll discuss reevaluating personal and professional priorities and values, how to understand when you need a rest, and how to keep your mental health up.

Mental Illness – Fighting The Invisible Monster Within

Mental illness is something that majority of us tend to ignore & shy out from talking about it. With growing competition, fast-paced life & constant changes one is easily vulnerable to it. Being in tech makes you more vulnerable to mental illness where mental stress if more & physical activity is less.

The talk will shed light on different forms of mental illness/conditions one might find dragged into unknowingly. How to identify such symptoms & how to get out it.

At the end of 2017 found my self-dragged into the hell of mental illness. The talk will include my own story & struggle how I felt throughout and how I managed to fight the invisible monster and how i am trying to keep it away.

Will touch around

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • OCD
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Imposter Syndrome

Building a better world, the WordPress way.

“WordPress community” when we hear this, it conveys a message of inclusion, freedom, love, support, and selflessness.

WordPress community is one of the most loved and respected community of open source contributors, users, business owners, marketers, designers, developers, and several other skill sets.

In my talk I would like to draw some inspiration from this diversity and inclusion towards building a better world. Everything that we do in WordPress community for WordPress, open source, or fellow community members can be connected with real world examples in a much broader sense. Every act of contribution in the form of code, design, marketing, or something else reflects some real world cases.

What if we could give back to the world the way we do with WordPress?

What if we could love the people around us the way we love WordPress?

How can we make this world a better place with small contributions the way we do with WordPress?

How can we change lives the way we do with WordPress?

How can we impart education and skill set with WordPress?

When I think of WordPress, I can think of WorldPeace too.

The beauty of open source and WordPress can be a great source of inspiration for a better world.

I hope to make a difference with my talk by conveying my message to fellow WordPress enthusiasts in helping this world a better place, the WordPress way.

WordPress Beyond Borders: Cross cultural communication and the fundamentals of caring

Today WordPress is available globally, in many many languages, and is created globally – by people from all over the world. In theory, it has gone beyond borders. But does that mean that there are no walls?

What are the secrets to successful connections in a multi cultural environment full of stereotypes, historical and personal bagage? How do you express yourself, understand others and contribute with confidence when most of us are not native English speakers?

Let’s talk about that.

Becoming A Core Committer

What is a WordPress Committer?
How exactly does someone become one?
What qualifications are necessary?

I’ll chat about how I became a committer, and how that process is similar and different than it is today.

We’ll walk through how new folks join the team, from Contributor to Committer.

Attendees will walk away understanding the various roles WordPress Committers play, and next steps to get involved.

8 lessons I have learnt through my mental illness (and how my life has improved with WordPress)

On 28. April 2012 my life changed forever and I could not do much about it. I lost my companion, had to give away my 14 year old daughter to a children’s home and in the end also lost my job. I spent 16 week on rehab in a trauma clinic where doctors told me that I am mentally ill: Depression, Borderline, PTSD, etc. and disabled for work.

This talk is about the lessons I have learnt to change my way from “I am mentally ill, cannot work any more and have no perspectives” to “I am mentally ill; despite this I shape my life and run a business”.

1. You´ve got to save yourself first before you can save others.
2. You cannot make it alone.
3. Rules do make sense.
4. Do not let others define who you are.
5. Find a community that supports you
6. Done is better than perfect.
7. It´s never gonna be fine again.
8. Speak up!

Key takeaway:
Do not let others define who you are: change your perspective and new opportunities arise. No matter how bad your situation may look. And WordPress is a good way to start: not only as a software for your business website but the community around it.

WordCamp Survival Strategies for Introverts

WordCamps, especially a large one like WordCamp Asia, can provide a lot of valuable information and networking opportunities. On the other hand they can also be very overwhelming, especially for those with introvert tendencies.

My talk will discuss various strategies I’ve personally developed over the years of attending various WordCamps, so that even an introvert can still get a lot of value out of a WordCamp, without sacrificing their mental health.

Becoming a Better Open Source Citizen (Despite Human Nature)

Open source has its own culture, with customs and expectations for interaction that are different from a lot of the behaviors that helped our species survive over the last few thousand years.

We’ll talk about how your brain might fight your behaving in transparent, altruistic, or collaborative ways, and how to reset some human nature “default settings” to help you become more successful in the WordPress open source project.
