“Contributor Day is my favorite part of WordCamps — not because it’s perfect, but because it shows what community really looks like in practice.”

My WordPress Journey

Contributor Day has always been my favorite part of WordCamps. The energy feels like an expanded version of what I love most about community work: people showing up, side-by-side, to build something bigger than themselves.

I first came to WordPress as a curious volunteer, looking for a place to learn and belong. What I found was an open-source community that welcomed questions, celebrated small wins, and taught me that contribution isn’t reserved for “experts.” It’s for anyone willing to help, one ticket, one bug, one translation, one conversation at a time.

Over the years, Contributor Days became the space where that belief turned into practice. I’ve attended Contributor Days at different WordCamps, and each time I leave reminded that WordPress grows because ordinary people choose to collaborate. I especially love the laid-back, informal vibe like a big community meetup, but with a shared purpose and even more friends.

In Nigeria, I’ve been privileged to host two Contributor Days for WordCamp Lagos. Those experiences deepened my respect for the behind-the-scenes work: onboarding newcomers, creating a welcoming flow, and making sure every contributor, no matter their level, feels useful and seen. I’ve learned that sustainable communities aren’t built on ego or perfection, but on people, teamwork, and belonging.

Contributor Day keeps me grounded in why I contribute: to serve the mission, support the people, and help WordPress remain a tool for inclusion and opportunity for all.
