“As a volunteer, I have shared with various cultures, learned new skills, and contributed to many with my knowledge.”
My WordPress Journey
Hello, WordPress Asia community! My name is Lua Salazar, and I am from Nicaragua. Currently, I serve as an organizer for the WordPress Latin America Volunteer Team, as well as a mentor for the WordPress Credit and the WordPress Event Support. I want to thank you for this opportunity to share a bit of my story.
I first discovered WordPress in 2018 at a local meetup. In 2019, I attended my first WordCamp, which was a magnificent experience. WordCamps are truly wonderful! While everything paused in 2020, by 2021, I had the chance to join the organizing team for WordCamp Nicaragua Online. That experience allowed me to contribute my knowledge to the community while also learning something vital: the community gives us a space to apply our expertise and develop brand-new skills.
In 2022, I traveled to WordCamp Costa Rica. It was a deeply enriching trip because it was there that Alex Cuadra, Vanessa Martínez, and I decided to reactivate the WordPress community in Nicaragua for 2023. It was one of our best decisions. Our meetups began reaching 50 to 60 attendees—yes, meetups of 50 people! This encouraged us to organize WordCamp Nicaragua 2023. I served as an organizer and also collaborated with ‘KidsCamp,’ a space where we teach children technology and design skills from an early age.
That success pushed me even further. I decided to apply to speak at WordCamps in Madrid and Valencia, and they gave me the opportunity. I enjoyed both experiences immensely, one on an AI panel and the other giving a talk on personal branding. I loved meeting more people from the community, but this time on the other side of the world.
We started 2024 strong with me volunteering at WordCamp Zaragoza, another great experience connecting with the Spanish community. Since returning to Nicaragua, we have been strengthening our local groups. As a mentor, I’ve helped activate two new communities outside of Managua, mostly made up of young people.
By 2025, our impact grew even larger. We began supporting not just local groups, but also the community in our neighboring country, Honduras. We organized their first in-person meetup together; the journey and the experience of meeting the WordPress Honduras community were wonderful. This opened the door for us to support the wider Central American region, collaborating with communities in Guatemala, Colombia, and Costa Rica.
Today, as I mentioned, I lead the WordPress Latin America volunteers. We mentor and guide anyone from across the region who wants to join the community. I am also currently mentoring young people in Bolivia through the WordPress Credit, a wonderful experience, as many are discovering the power of the platform for the first time.
Comparing the ‘Lua of 2019’ to the ‘Lua of 2025,’ the transformation is clear. Professionally, I now run an agency called Valexweb alongside my husband. We provide web support, design, and marketing, and we continue to give back to the community through our work.
All of this is thanks to the strength the community has given me. The community doesn’t just let you volunteer; it gives back to you. It gives you the chance to grow as a professional and the ability to help others. So, if you are out there, I invite you to join the WordPress community. You will be welcomed—not just in Asia, but globally.
