Introducing Contributor Buddy: A New Initiative for Contributor Day at WordCamp Asia 2026

Contributor Day has always been an important part of the WordPress ecosystem. It is where people from different backgrounds come together to collaborate, learn, and contribute to WordPress.

At WordCamp Asia 2026, we are excited to introduce a new initiative designed to make Contributor Day more welcoming and approachable for everyone: Contributor Buddy.

What is Contributor Buddy?

Contributor Buddy is a simple initiative to help first-time contributors get started more comfortably during Contributor Day.

Contributor Buddies are experienced contributors who volunteer to help newcomers navigate Contributor Day and begin their first contribution. They will be available at different team tables and can assist attendees with:

  • Understanding how the team works
  • Identifying beginner-friendly tasks
  • Answering initial questions
  • Helping you get started with your first contribution

The goal is to create a more approachable and supportive environment, especially for those attending Contributor Day for the first time.

How to Spot a Contributor Buddy?

Contributor Buddies will be easy to recognize. They will wear a visible Contributor Buddy badge, pinned to their T-shirt on the chest or in a visible place.

When you arrive at a team table, take a quick look around for the badge. If you’re unsure where to start, simply walk up and say hello. Contributor Buddies are there to help you get comfortable, answer your initial questions, and guide you toward your first contribution.

Here’s what the Contributor Buddy badge will look like:

Who Can Become a Contributor Buddy?

If you have contributed to WordPress before and would like to help newcomers, you can volunteer as a Contributor Buddy.

Simply reach out to the table lead at your chosen team and express your interest. If appropriate, the table lead will provide you with a Contributor Buddy badge.

This is a lightweight role. You are not expected to lead the table or take on additional responsibilities. The idea is simply to help newcomers feel more comfortable and supported.

Why This Initiative?

Contributor Day at large events brings together:

  • First-time contributors
  • Students and community members
  • Experienced contributors
  • Long-time WordPress contributors

While this diversity is one of Contributor Day’s biggest strengths, it can sometimes feel overwhelming for newcomers.

The Contributor Buddy initiative helps bridge this gap by making experienced contributors more visible and approachable.
