Introduction
Themes team is a group of volunteers who review and approve themes submitted to be included in the official WordPress Theme directory. If you are a theme developer and want to publish themes in an official directory, you’ve to submit it and the themes team will review it before publishing. They also give feedback and suggestions based on the review guidelines.
Themes team also reviews patterns submitted in the patterns directory.
What Does the Themes Team Do?
The team handles licensing, security, and code quality reviews. They help build and maintain default themes like Twenty Twenty Five, Twenty Twenty Four, etc. They lead the community themes development.
The primary focus of the team is to help theme authors transition to block-based themes.
The team also maintains the official theme review requirements handbook and theme unit test data. They also maintain and develop Theme Check plugin.
They also have code packages for themes available for use on GitHub and Packagist. They have to maintain those as well.
Your Path as a Contributor
There are basically multiple ways to contribute to the themes team.
Making free themes for WordPress repositories.
The first idea is to make a quality standard theme and make it available for everyone. Currently there are more than 14000 free themes available and you can create another new and creative theme and submit it.
Review the themes that are submitted in the repository.
Another idea is to review the theme based on the theme review guidelines that are submitted by developers. You’ve to visit the theme review queue page, comment on the theme ticket that you want to review and start reviewing. The Themes Team representative will assign you the ticket for the review. This is another method of contribution.
Help to maintain documentation, Theme Check plugin and code packages.
You can also contribute by maintaining theme review handbooks, fixing Theme Check plugin issue or maintain or develop new packages for themes.

- Reply questions in the slack channel or in the theme ticket and help theme authors.
- Review themes or develop themes to make themes more powerful for WordPress.
