More Than Code — The Poetry of Open Source in Motion
Thinking about contributing to WordPress but wondering how to start? WordCamp Asia 2026 opens with Contributor Day on April 9, 2026 at the Jio World Convention Centre, Mumbai. It is a welcoming on-ramp for all skill levels. Whether you write code or prefer non-technical tasks, we will help you make a meaningful contribution. Join hundreds of contributors for a focused day of learning, collaboration, and real impact.

Contributor Day is more than a chance to give back. It is a practical environment where you meet people, solve real tasks, and can see how the project fits together. Join the contributor day where you can:
- Connect with WordPress professionals. Engage with contributors across engineering, design, translation, documentation, community, accessibility, testing, and mentorship. Meet people who actively shape the WordPress project.
- Receive support at any level. Structured guidance is available all day, whether you’re a first-timer or a returning contributor seeking deeper involvement. Mentors and team representatives are ready to help.
- Learn through practice. Many contributions are reviewed, improved, and even merged during the event, allowing you to see the impact of your work right away.Make meaningful progress. Many attendees complete contributions during the Contributor Day, gaining a better understanding of WordPress workflows and witnessing their efforts move forward. The momentum you build during Contributor Day becomes a foundation for continued contribution long after the event.
- Explore the Open-Source Library. Have meaningful, one-on-one conversations with Open-Source Books. Formerly known as Human Books, this space now covers a wider range of topics including contribution pathways, growth, leadership, workflows, and personal stories within the open-source journey.
To help you get familiar with how it works, you can also explore the previous edition and see the kinds of stories and experiences shared by past Open-Source Books.
- Join practical Contributor Day workshops. Participate in hands-on workshops offered throughout the day, covering various skill levels including beginner-friendly sessions. These workshops focus on essential skills, contribution workflows, and practical techniques you can immediately apply when you return to your team table.
Contributor Day also aligns with the Five for the Future initiative, a community program that encourages individuals and organisations to dedicate time to WordPress. Companies that support staff participation help sustain the software they rely on and grow internal skills.
Supporting employee participation in Contributor Day helps your company with:
- Stronger presence in the WordPress ecosystem. Build real relationships with experienced contributors and project leads, while raising your company’s visibility and credibility.
- Talent development and retention. Your team learns practical skills on real work, comes back energised, and is more likely to stay.
- Operational advantage. Hear about changes sooner, plan with the roadmap, and align your products and services with the platform you rely on.
If your company plans to participate, encourage teammates to register for Contributor Day and to choose teams that align with your products and expertise. Even a few hours per month makes a difference.
What Happens at Contributor Day?
The day begins with a short welcome. Instead of a first-timer onboarding session, we will run a focused workshop for new contributors. This workshop introduces why contributions matter, the benefits for you and the project, the skills you can build, and the basic tools you will use. After the workshop, you can choose a Make WordPress team table and start contributing.

Throughout the day, you can also join specialized workshops led by experienced contributors. These sessions focus on concrete skills — from debugging and documentation workflows to accessibility, design processes, testing practices, pattern creation, community building, and more. You’re free to attend multiple workshops depending on your interests.
Another space you can explore is the Open-Source Library (formerly known as the Human Library). Here, you can have meaningful one-on-one conversations with “Open-Source Books” — contributors who share real stories about their journeys, challenges, and lessons in open source. It’s a great way to learn directly from people who have been shaping the project.

Across all team tables, typical contribution tasks include coding and testing, documentation writing, translation, support, design, accessibility reviews, training content creation, community planning, marketing, and more. Each area is supported by Table Leads, who help guide the work, keep the environment welcoming, and ensure that everyone — whether new or experienced — can contribute effectively.
What’s New for the Upcoming Contributor Day?
Contributor Day – Open-Source Library

First, we will have Contributor Day – Open-Source Library, formerly called Contributor Day – Human Library at previous WordCamp Asia events, a space for brief one-on-one conversations with experienced contributors. It is a straightforward way to ask where to start, which teams fit your skills, and how to grow your impact.
New this year, the Open-Source Books, also formerly known as “Human Books”, are opening up to a wider range of topics, so conversations can cover not only contribution pathways and team fit but also broader areas like growth, leadership, and practical workflows tailored to your goals.

The workshop lineup for Contributor Day is now available to explore, with a range of hands-on sessions created to support both first-time attendees and those looking to strengthen their skills before diving deeper into contribution. You can view the sessions, timings, and facilitators in our Contributor Day Workshops at WordCamp Asia 2026 announcement.
Shape Contributor Day
Alongside these improvements, we also want Contributor Day itself to keep evolving in ways that truly support contributors. That is why we are introducing Shape Contributor Day, an ongoing effort to learn from real experiences, gather meaningful feedback, and better understand what helps contributors feel confident, supported, and motivated to participate.

Shape Contributor Day creates space for reflection, conversation, and shared insights about what works well and what can be improved. Whether you are attending for the first time or have joined multiple Contributor Days before, your perspective will help guide how we design and improve Contributor Day, not just for 2026 but for future editions of WordCamp Asia as well.
Learn more about Shape Contributor Day and how you can participate by visiting the Shape Contributor Day announcement page.
Contributor Buddy

This year, we are introducing Contributor Buddy, a simple new initiative designed to help first-time contributors feel more comfortable getting started at Contributor Day. It is meant to make the experience more welcoming and approachable, especially for attendees who may be joining a team for the first time.
Contributor Buddies are experienced contributors who will be present at team tables to help newcomers navigate the day. They can answer initial questions, explain how the team works, point attendees to beginner-friendly tasks, and help them begin their first contribution with more confidence.
If you have contributed to WordPress before and would like to help others get started, becoming a Contributor Buddy is a simple way to support the community
Interested in becoming a Contributor Buddy? Here’s how:
- Choose the team you would like to support. Think about which Make Team you are most comfortable contributing to and where you can best help new contributors get started. This could be a team you have contributed to before or one where you feel confident answering basic questions and helping others find their place.
- Approach the table lead and express your interest. Once you arrive at the team table, introduce yourself to the table lead and let them know that you would like to serve as a Contributor Buddy. This helps the table lead understand that you are available to support newcomers during the day.
- If appropriate, the table lead may assign you as a Contributor Buddy. The table lead will decide whether the role is a good fit based on the needs of the team and your contribution experience. This helps ensure that Contributor Buddies are able to give helpful guidance and create a positive experience for first-time contributors.
- Once confirmed, you will receive a Contributor Buddy badge. If you are assigned the role, the table lead will provide you with a Contributor Buddy badge to wear visibly on your shirt or event badge. This will make it easier for new contributors and other attendees to recognize you and approach you for help.

WordPress Make Teams
The WordPress project is powered by over 20 unique “Make” teams, each focusing on a different part of the software we love. When you sign up for Contributor Day, you’ll have the chance to pick which groups you’d like to jump in with.
If you are not sure where your skills fit best, our Contributor Wizard is a great way to find your perfect match through a few simple questions. Don’t feel like you have to stick to just one area, either! Feel free to select multiple teams during registration and decide exactly how you want to spend your time once you arrive.
Please keep in mind that while we aim to host as many team tables as possible, final availability depends on our volunteer leads.

Below the summary layout, you can also explore each table in more detail. This makes it easier to find your team, get familiar with the setup, and move around the space with more confidence throughout the day.
