WordCamp Asia 2026 is calling for Wapuu designs! Whether you’re a designer, artist, or simply a fan of Wapuu, we’d love to see your take, something that celebrates Mumbai’s energy and the spirit of WordPress.
What is Wapuu?
Wapuu is the much-loved unofficial mascot of WordPress.
The idea for a mascot first came up during the WordCamp Tokyo 2009 after-party, and illustrator Kazuko Kaneuchi later brought the character to life.
Wapuu officially made its debut at WordCamp Fukuoka 2011, and since then, it has become a global community icon.

Over the years, WordPress communities around the world have created their own local versions of Wapuu, each one inspired by regional culture, humor, and creativity.
Because the design is shared under the GPL license, anyone can adapt it, which is a big part of why Wapuu feels so community-owned and universally loved.
Today, you’ll find WordCamp Wapuus dressed in traditional outfits, holding regional snacks, celebrating festivals, or simply showing off local personality.

Wapuu provides a fun and light-hearted way for WordCamps and meetup groups to express their identity while staying connected to a shared global tradition.
A fun fact about Wapuu
Wapuus have been adapted for every fandom you can imagine.
From samurai and anime style in Japan, to Oktoberfest outfits in Germany, to cowboy Wapuu in the US, even superhero, scuba-diving, barista, and hacker Wapuus exist.
If you can imagine it, someone has probably designed it. The community created Wapu.us, documenting every Wapuu variation ever made, something no other open-source project really has.
